Are Blinds And Shades The Same?

Custom blinds and custom window shades may seem like the same thing, but they in fact, are not the same, even though they do somewhat serve the same purpose, as functional interior window treatments designed to provide privacy, control room temperature and control light (room darkening). While they share similar goals, their structure, aesthetic, and how they operate differ. Many homeowners will combine both blinds and shades in their home, depending on style and privacy needs. Blinds are durable and easy to maintain and wipe down, while roman shades are loved for their versatility in style and ability to create a cozy atmosphere and the option to choose from a wider range of color and fabric styles. With custom blinds, you are often limited to solid colors and fewer options than fabric shades. Understanding the pros and cons of window shades vs blinds can help you make an informed decision. Selecting shades vs blinds often comes down to style preferences and functionality. Ultimately, the choice between blinds vs shade depends on your specific needs and design goals.

Let’s first talk about Window Blinds. The major difference is the material. Window blinds are made using wood or aluminum mostly.

  • Material: Made of rigid, hard materials like wood, faux wood, vinyl, or aluminum.

  • Design: Composed of individual horizontal or vertical slats.

  • Functionality: They can be raised and lowered, but crucially, the slats can also be tilted to let in light without sacrificing privacy.

  • Good for: High-moisture areas (like kitchens and bathrooms) or spaces where you want exact control over incoming light

Window Shades… Custom Window Shades are what we do here at Sew Lovely and our expertise! They are made using soft material/fabric. They also do not have any slats like window blinds and are not wooden shades.

  • Material: Made of softer, continuous pieces of fabric

  • Design: A single, continuous sheet or pleated material.

  • Functionality: Roman Shades fold up and down, while roller shades roll up and down. You cannot tilt them for partial light; to adjust, you must raise or lower the entire shade.

  • Good for: Bedrooms and living rooms where you want a softer, cozy aesthetic and high levels of room-darkening and also for any other room like a kitchen window (above a sink), dining room, sunroom windows, hallway window, front doors, bathrooms, playrooms, office window treatments and more! Can be blackout shades, light filtering shades.

Both custom blinds and custom shades are beautiful window treatments but they for sure are different!
